Adobe is rolling out a suite of groundbreaking AI features for Photoshop and Illustrator designed to expedite the design process while offering users enhanced control and variety. Leveraging Adobe's Firefly generative AI models, these new tools promise to significantly reduce the time required to manually produce intricate image details.
Among the most notable additions is the Generative Shape Fill feature, which fills detailed vector graphics into shapes based on simple text prompts. The Firefly Vector AI model handles the heavy lifting, providing multiple options for logos and other branded materials. For example, a graphic designer working on a new logo for a tech startup could use Generative Shape Fill to generate complex vector patterns and shapes that align with the brand’s futuristic theme by entering prompts like “geometric tech shapes” or “futuristic circuits.”
Another innovative tool, the Text to Pattern option, converts text prompts into scalable vector patterns. If users are unsure how to describe what they want, the new Style Reference feature can take uploaded images as inspiration for AI creation. Additionally, the Retype feature can edit static text and suggest fonts that match the image.
Photoshop-specific AI features are focused on streamlining repetitive tasks essential for image editing. The Selection Brush Tool and Adjustment Brush Tool, as their names suggest, make selecting and adjusting parts of an image easier with AI assistance, ensuring more precise separation of elements.
These AI enhancements are more than mere digital aids. The Dimension tool offers precise sizing measurements, while the Mockup feature can create visual prototypes that fit the contours of real-life objects. For instance, an architect could use the Dimension tool to plot out accurate floor plans and elevations, while a fashion designer might use Mockup to see how their designs appear on different garments.
Despite these advancements, Adobe remains at the center of a broader debate over ethical AI and synthetic media. The company has assured that it will not use customer projects for AI training, but the conflict over ethical AI continues.
Adobe's integration of AI into Illustrator and Photoshop represents a significant milestone in its technology strategy. The company's philosophy underscores that these tools are intended to enhance both productivity and creativity, helping designers push the boundaries of their vision.
“Adobe’s new innovations in Illustrator and Photoshop are built directly into designers’ existing workflows, offering new ways to create and helping them to work faster and focus on what they do best - drawing, designing, and bringing their creative visions to life,” said Ashley Still, Adobe's senior vice president for digital media, in a release on the new features.
