Google has announced that Gemini, its AI tool rivaling ChatGPT, now supports AI-generated images of people. This feature, once available, was disabled in February due to concerns about misuse. Users had quickly discovered how to create disturbing images using the tool, prompting Google to act. Now, Google is reintroducing the feature with strict guardrails to prevent exploitative use.
Alongside this development, Google revealed the rollout of customized "Gems," a feature initially showcased at Google I/O.
**Gemini's New Feature: AI-Generated Images of People**
Gemini users will soon be able to create AI-generated images of people, albeit with some restrictions. If you currently try to prompt Gemini to generate a person, you'll receive a message saying: "Image generation of people is coming soon to Gemini Advanced. Sign up and get notified when you receive early access at gemini.google/advanced." However, this wait is almost over. In the coming days, users with Gemini Advanced, Business, or Enterprise accounts will gain early access.
Despite the excitement, Google emphasizes that this feature is not open-ended. The company claims to have made "technical improvements" to Gemini and conducted "red-teaming exercises" to ensure ethical use.
David Citron, Senior Director of Product Management at Google Gemini, explained: “We don’t support the generation of photorealistic, identifiable individuals, depictions of minors, or excessively gory, violent, or sexual scenes.” He acknowledged that the tool isn't perfect but assured that Google would continue refining it based on user feedback. Currently, the AI-generated images feature supports prompts in English, with plans to expand to other languages.
Google Gemini operates on Imagen 3, a generative AI model developed by Google. This model has been upgraded to deliver enhanced image quality and, like its predecessor, uses SynthID for watermarking AI-generated content.
**Personalized Gems: A New Way to Interact with AI**
Google's announcement also highlighted the introduction of customized "Gems," personalized versions of Gemini designed to cater to specific user needs. According to a mid-May blog post, Google explained, "You can create any Gem you dream up: a gym buddy, sous chef, coding partner, or creative writing guide. They’re easy to set up, too."
Users can customize Gems by specifying desired behaviors and responses. For example, one could prompt, "You're my nutrition coach. Give me a daily nutrition plan. Be optimistic, energetic, and inspiring." Google has also pre-designed several Gems, such as The Learning Coach, The Brainstormer, The Career Guide, The Writing Editor, and The Coding Partner.
These new features, including the people-focused AI-generated images and customized Gems, are rolling out to Gemini Advanced, Gemini Business, and Gemini Enterprise users.
