Microsoft retired the over-eager office assistant Clippy nearly two decades ago, but the idea of a friendly AI helper seems to have returned. The company is now revamping Copilot, its text-based AI tool bundled with Windows and other software, introducing new features like vision, voice, and the ability to solve more complex problems. Copilot’s revamped persona is also designed to be more “encouraging.”

“We really are at this amazing kind of transition point,” said Mustafa Suleyman, CEO of Microsoft AI. “AI companions now see what we see, hear what we hear, and speak in the same language that we use to communicate with one another.”

Reception to Copilot has been mixed, with some users citing issues such as lag or vagueness. Nevertheless, Microsoft is confident that the tool will eventually become a core component of its suite of products, including Windows and Office. Google is also integrating AI into its office apps like Gmail and Google Docs, increasing competition in the market.

One key upgrade is Copilot’s ability to converse naturally with users in several human-like voices. “You can interrupt in mid-flow, and it can also actively listen,” said Suleyman. Additionally, Copilot’s emotional intelligence has been enhanced, designed to act as a supportive "hype man." The new voice feature is available today in English-speaking countries, with other nations to follow.

The changes reflect Microsoft's efforts to experiment with its AI tools as it races to stay ahead in the fast-developing AI landscape. Like its competitors, Microsoft is striving to make AI not just functional but also personable and supportive.

In an increasingly digital world, tools like Copilot represent a shift in how AI is embedded in daily tasks, moving beyond technical applications and becoming part of everyday human interaction. However, Microsoft still faces the challenge of proving the true value of these experimental features to a broad user base.
