Copilot is Microsoft’s productivity-boosting generative AI, and it continues to expand alongside Microsoft's AI ambitions. Currently, there are about a dozen Copilot-branded products integrated into Microsoft software, offering capabilities like summarizations in Outlook and transcriptions in Teams.

Additionally, GitHub's Copilot tool generates code, while Copilot also exists in Windows and on the web, functioning as a general-purpose assistant. Leveraging models fine-tuned by OpenAI, Copilot can perform a wide range of tasks, from writing essays to summarizing web sources. It also taps into Bing to gather up-to-date information, making it competitive with similar AI tools like OpenAI’s ChatGPT and Google’s Gemini.

Copilot can generate images with Microsoft’s Image Creator, which is based on OpenAI's DALL-E 3 model. It also integrates with third-party apps, such as Instacart for meal planning and Kayak for trip booking. Users can embed Copilot content into digital canvases through Copilot Pages and enjoy the business-focused BizChat hub, which aids in creating project plans, meeting notes, and more.

For Windows 11 users, Copilot acts as a digital concierge, controlling settings like battery saver or displaying system information. Copilot Pro, the premium version, offers access to OpenAI’s models, as well as enhanced features like higher-resolution images. A Microsoft 365 Copilot version is also available for enterprise customers, focusing on apps like Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.

There are also several specialized Copilots. For example, GitHub Copilot assists developers by generating code and offering contextual support. Other Copilots exist for sales, supply chain management, and security, showing Microsoft’s ambition to integrate AI across various sectors.

However, like many generative AI models, Microsoft Copilot has its issues. The technology can hallucinate information or produce errors, such as inventing attendees in meeting summaries. Additionally, Copilot’s use of public data to train its models raises copyright and ethical concerns, as data owners have filed lawsuits challenging the practice.

As AI continues to evolve, Microsoft’s Copilot products are paving the way for generative AI to become more ingrained in everyday workflows, with ongoing updates set to enhance their utility across industries.
