Twenty-something knowledge workers are overwhelmingly turning to generative AI tools, according to a survey released Monday by Google Workspace.
Why It Matters
The young workforce has long been the harbinger of technological shifts. Gen Z's rapid adoption of AI could be a preview of its future ubiquity in professional environments. From email to collaborative tools, history shows that the youngest workers often drive the adoption curve for office technology, with the rest soon following suit.
The Survey
Conducted in late summer, Google surveyed 1,005 full-time knowledge workers aged 22 to 39, spanning those in leadership positions and aspirants alike.
Key Findings:
93% of Gen Z workers (ages 22–27) reported using two or more AI tools weekly, such as ChatGPT, DALL-E, or Otter.ai.
79% of millennials (ages 28–39) also reported similar usage patterns.
Younger workers are leveraging AI for revising emails, taking meeting notes, and brainstorming ideas, according to Yulie Kwon Kim, VP of Product at Google Workspace.
Additionally, 88% of Gen Z workers said they rely on AI to tackle overwhelming tasks.
The Reality Check
While Google stands to benefit from AI adoption—given its significant investments in this field—it's worth noting that broader AI adoption across the workforce is stalling. A recent, more extensive study found nearly half of full-time workers hesitant to even admit to using AI tools.
However, younger workers appear less inhibited: 52% of Gen Z respondents said they frequently discuss their AI tool usage with colleagues, showcasing their comfort with integrating such technology into their workflows.
What to Watch
Proponents of AI emphasize its potential to streamline work processes, reducing mundane tasks like note-taking to enable focus on higher-value objectives. While these tools may drive productivity, they also prompt concerns about job displacement.
