The New York Times recently published an in-depth look at the “fraying” relationship between OpenAI and its key investor, partner, and increasingly, its rival—Microsoft. According to the report, the five-year collaboration has started to cool due to mounting financial pressures on OpenAI, limited computing power provided by Microsoft, and differing views on certain foundational principles.
One of the most intriguing aspects highlighted in the article is a clause within OpenAI’s contract with Microsoft. The clause reportedly stipulates that Microsoft’s access to OpenAI’s technology would be terminated if OpenAI were to develop artificial general intelligence (AGI)—an AI system capable of rivaling human thinking. This clause is believed to exist as a safeguard to prevent Microsoft from potentially misusing the technology.
The decision regarding when AGI has been achieved, however, is in the hands of OpenAI’s board, leaving a significant amount of subjectivity in the process. As OpenAI CEO Sam Altman explained last year, determining how close we are to AGI is becoming increasingly difficult. He noted that the transition to AGI may be much more gradual and nuanced than many anticipate.
While the companies have not yet officially commented, the report—based on interviews with 19 people familiar with the situation—suggests the clause may play a pivotal role in shaping the future of this partnership.
As we watch the evolving dynamics between OpenAI and Microsoft, it’s a reminder of the critical role technology companies play in shaping our future.
